Identity Driven Networking (IDN) : enabling an open environment by providing role based visitors access control over existing infrastructure

Andrew Hall 2006

The presentation will discusss the complexities in the education sector in being able to provide uniformity of access across heterogeneous networking environments. The complexity of managing networking environments and identities in education organizations does not easily allow enablement of open learning environments (i.e. granulated services, allowing formal visitors and contractors access to resources, controlling per user bandwidth usage or allowed content per group etc.) as there is an in-balance between the need for openness and access and the ability of the infrastructure to properly and effectively support it.

The application of IDN combines the power of Role-based Access Control (RBAC) and granular policy based metrics which creates new opportunities to enable open environments with less cost in terms of management overhead and without the need to replace existing hardware and technologies.
