You will be in a lab performing various procedures to secure a Windows system and will cover the following areas:

  • Security baselines
  • Tools of the trade
  • Security templates - Microsoft and third party
  • In depth look at a security template
  • Key settings - decisions that must be made
  • Applying security policies on individual machines
  • Use of Group Policy Objects (GPO)
  • Using Software Update Server (SUS) for updates
  • Trouble shooting

Notes will be provided for you to take away and apply the same procedures on your own systems.

About Elliot Gingold

Elliot Gingold graduated from Monash University with a PhD in Biochemistry and then worked in the UK as a lecturer in Molecular Biology/Genetics. During this time he also kept up an interest in Computing, and completed an MSc in this area. On return to Australia he decided to concentrate on the computing area and has worked for the last 5 years at this University, first in Civil Engineering and then in the Information Division. Elliot is currently involved in the administration and support of the University Active Directory structure and has taken a keen interest in the issues surrounding security of Microsoft systems.
