Writing Router ACLs to protect your network

Sasha Dangubic 2004

University department LAN segments are interconnected by routers that are either managed by Information Division or by the department IT staff themselves. These routers can contain Access Control Lists (ACL) which are used for network control and se curity. They allow you to filter traffic going into or coming out of router interfaces, ac cording to a set of defined criteria. IT staff who do not manage their own routers can sti ll request ACL changes by sending email to netquery (at) unimelb.edu.au.

This seminar will cover the following areas:

  • Understanding and writing Access Control Lists
  • How an ACL actually works inside a router or multilayer switch
  • How ACLs can help secure your LAN segments
  • Blocking ports that are used by worms and other exploits

Even if you may not be involved in writing ACLs yourself, the information you will learn can help you in communicating to the Information Division what you need to secure your LAN segments.
